Houghton Mifflin Reading, K-6

"The Calabash trainer was very pleasant and thorough. She made it very interactive and enjoyable, yet challenging."
Teacher Assistant, Los Alamitos, CA

Description and Price
Calabash Professional Learning Systems is the only California State Board - approved provider for professional development for classroom aides and paraprofessionals using the Houghton Mifflin Reading K-6 program. (We are also approved to serve teachers.)

We are pleased to offer:

20 hours of professional development in a three-day training,

plus

20 hours of follow-up which participants complete during the school year.

During this training paraprofessionals will learn:

  • The scope and sequence of Houghton Mifflin Reading;
  • How the California language arts standards are taught in the program;
  • How to support teachers in five specific areas: blending, setting up centers, decoding in reading groups, comprehension strategies, and technology;
  • How to use specific program components such as the student practice books, universal access resource books and Home/Community Connection.

Total cost: $500 per participant. (Minimum class size of 15; participants may be mixed in terms of the grade levels they are assigned to in the district.)

Note that with AB 466 or SB472 funding, districts qualify for a total of $1000 per paraprofessional, of which up to $500 may be used for a stipend for the trainees. Calabash will deliver the first 20 hours of training in a classroom setting. Each participant will receive a packet of activities and materials to complete individually during the school year. The classroom teacher or school principal must sign the packet indicating that the 20 hours of follow-up work have been completed. Once the packet with signatures has been sent to Calabash Professional Learning Systems, we will send each participant a certificate of completion (with a copy to the district office) which documents that the district is eligible to collect AB 466 or SB472 funding for paraprofessionals.
