What SB 472 Requires
- Professional development that focuses on the State Board of Education's recently adopted instructional materials
- Training content that is highly integrated with the program's content

What Calabash Delivers
Calabash Professional Learning Systems, Houghton Mifflin's professional development division, delivers what SB 472 requires—training that is grade-level and program specific.
Calabash delivers program-specific training for Houghton Mifflin Reading. The training features phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Instruction prepares participants to apply their new knowledge and skills in the classroom.
What The Course Covers
Overview of 40-Hour Training Institute
- Thirty-two hours (80%) of the training will focus on the instructional program, and 19.2 (60% of 32 hrs) hours of the training will focus on the first ten weeks of instruction.
The remaining eight hours of instruction focus on program research, standards, framework, and the instructional value of diagnostic and standardized tests.
- Daily instructional time during training includes: 30% direct instruction and presentation, 20% for demonstrations of successful teaching strategies, and 50% practice, small- and large- group discussions, and other participant activities to reinforce learning.
Day One — focuses on the program overview, components, diagnostic assessment, and week one of instruction for each grade.
Days Two through Four — focus on weeks 2–10, including embedded standards and assessment (ongoing formal, informal, and Theme Assessment), differentiated instruction, and classroom management.
Day Five — focuses on the remainder of the year, ongoing and summative assessments.
